A message from the bishop

The Power of Parable: Stories of everyday people make faith come alive (Jan/Feb 2017)

My dear friends,

Ten years ago, the Diocese of Grand Rapids embarked
on a journey to help spread the good news in a new way to all Catholics in the diocese. This instrument of
evangelization became known as FAITH Grand Rapids
magazine, and I’m pleased to announce that this issue
(Jan./Feb.) marks the 10th anniversary of this publication.

I commend Bishop Walter Hurley for his decision to publish this magazine in which stories of faith come alive. Jesus taught in parables – nothing is more appealing than reading stories about people who have experienced Christ in the key moments of their lives. Stories of everyday men, women and teens giving their Catholic faith priority in their lives remind us that we can all help build the Church in some small, yet significant, way.

Each issue provides readers with ways to enhance their understanding of their Catholic faith: at home,
school or work. You can find advice for daily living and see how your Catholic faith can be interwoven
into all aspects of life. My hope is that this magazine has helped you to enrich your faith by learning
about the Mass, relating with family on a deeper level or learning about the opportunities offered in
our parishes.

“As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. Now the body is not a single part, but many.” (1 Cor 12:12-14) Although we are many parts, we all contribute to make the Church one body, the body of Christ. This is why the Lord provides us with different gifts. Imagine if we were all good at math or all good at public speaking. We would never rely on each other to make a whole.

The same is true of our parishes. We need people to serve in different capacities to help our parishes
flourish. You never know when an inspiration, a “spark of divine grace,” will jump off the page at you! Perhaps you read about a way to volunteer in your parish that you didn’t know about before. Maybe you learned more about our growing Hispanic community in Grand Rapids from our Spanish-language issue (published four times a year). We can celebrate our diverse cultural backgrounds, ethnic origins and gifts, but our faith is what makes us one in the Lord. Together, we can continue to build the Catholic Church in Grand Rapids through efforts to welcome people of diverse cultural heritage, occupations and talents.

May we build up the kingdom of heaven on earth by coming to know the Lord more intimately through frequent prayer, and by continuing the good works that have already begun in our parishes, schools and communities. After you finish reading your FAITH Grand Rapids magazine every month, why not pass it
along to a family member or friend, or leave it at your doctor’s office? You never know who may pick it up and be inspired by the stories inside. This is another way that you can be an ambassador for Christ and contribute to the evangelical mission of our Church!

Sincerely yours in the Lord,
Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak
