Who are We?

"God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him,
male and female he created them."

Humans occupy a unique place in creation: we were created in love, created to be loved, and it is by His love that we exist.  God created us in his image to reflect all aspects of his nature and be in relationship with us, and we alone are called to share, by knowledge and love, in God's own life.  It was for this purpose that we were created, and this is the fundamental reason for our dignity:  We seek validation and meaning in many places,our career, in our activities, and relationships; but only when we look to God will we gain a greater understand of who we are.

When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and stars that you set in place;
What are humans that you are mindful of them,
mere mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them little less than a god,
crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them rule over the works of your hands,
put all things at their feet:–
Psalm 8:4-6 (New American Bible)

We are spiritual and physical

…God has made us a unity of body and soul.  The human soul is not only the source of physical life for our bodies but is also the core of our spiritual powers of knowing and loving.  While our bodies come into being through physical processes, our souls are all created directly by God.  (Catholic Catechism for Adults, Man and Woman in the beginning)

We are created male and female

Man and woman are both with one and the same dignity "in the image of God." In their "being-man" and "being-woman," they reflect the Creator's wisdom and goodness.  In no way is God in man's image because he is neither man nor woman. God is pure spirit in which there is no place for the difference between the sexes. But the respective "perfections" of man and woman reflect something of the infinite perfection of God: those of a mother and those of a father and husband.  God also created man and woman together and willed each for the other.  (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church)

 "It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helper fit for him." (Genesis 2)
