Recognizing God's Presence

Human reason can lead us to the conclusion that we have a purpose and destiny in life.   We believe that there is something more to life than our own circle of interests and friends and that our reason for existence is far beyond the narrow limits of ourselves.

I wanted movement and not a calm course of existence.  I wanted excitement and danger and the chance to sacrifice myself for my love.  I felt in myself a superabundance of energy which found no outlet in our quiet life – Leo Tolstoy

God puts this awareness in our hearts, telling us we are created with significance.

Without supposing that God manipulates us as though we were puppets, we come to recognize his influence in our lives in subtle ways which defy description as mere coincidence.  Therefore, he gives us the freedom to make choices which affect our lives and the lives of others.

We also gain some knowledge of God’s devotion to us in moments of great exhilaration and joy as well as in moments of profound sadness and suffering.  Whether it’s the perfect timing of meeting our basic needs, the long awaited arrival of a newborn child, or the friend who came to visit us in tragedy we are comforted in knowing that God is in everything and everywhere.
