The ABC's of promoting religious vocations

As we begin a new year, I thought that I would share 26 practical ways to promote and support priestly and religious vocations. Patterned on the alphabet, they offer practical tips and tactics to cultivate a culture of vocations within the family, parish, and in school/ religious education settings

Accept your own baptismal responsibility to "go make disciples" by consciously cultivating a culture of vocations in whatever circumstances you find yourself.

Be a good role model, especially among children and young people, by manifesting visible respect, gratitude and support to priests and religious.

Commit to spending an hour of prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament at least once a month to pray specifically for an increase in religious vocations.

Dedicate time for prayer each day. Pray that the young men and women of your parish or school will be open to God's will when discerning their life's vocation.

Encourage a young person to prayerfully consider a vocation to religious life or the priesthood.

Fast from eating food, drinking certain beverages or indulging in some type of legitimate pleasure as a personal sacrifice dedicated to the increase of vocations to religious life and priesthood.

Give freely of your time and talent to create innovative approaches to inform youth about priestly and religious vocations.

Help organize an annual vocations fair or event at your parish or school.

Invite young people whom you think might have the "right stuff" to take the Ministry Potential Discerner selfassessment survey at www.testyourcall.com.

Join a Catholic organization that is specifically committed to fostering vocations, such as the Knights of Columbus or Serra Clubs, or form a parish vocations committee.

Keep vocational literature handy to distribute to anyone who expresses some interest in a priestly or religious vocation.

Learn to appreciate better how priests are called to be "other Christs" and those called to consecrated life are to love with "an undivided heart."

Mentor a young person who may be seriously considering a life of service and sacrifice to the church as priests and religious.

Nurture vocations early on by talking about priesthood and religious life with your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews.

Offer to assist the vocation office of a religious community or diocese by becoming a local promoter or contact for those interested.

Pass out vocational prayer card or other printed resources at your parish or among your family and friends to encourage them to pray for and promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Question candidates preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation to see if they have ever seriously considered the priesthood or religious life as their personal vocational call.

Recite the rosary for the express intention that many more young people will respond to God's invitation to serve as a priest or religious.

Sponsor a seminarian or religious in formation by making time to pray for him/her.

Talk to your pastor about having your parish launch the "Follow Me Vocation Icon Prayer Program" to cultivate vocation awareness through prayer.

Utilize innovation multimedia resources such as DVDs and Web sites to get the word out regarding priesthood and religious vocations.

Volunteer to lead a weekly Way of the Cross for Vocations at your local parish.

Write a card, letter or e-mail to a seminarian or novice to express your prayerful encouragement of his or her vocation.

"X" -celerate your vocational efforts, seeking Our Lady's intercession, for she is truly the "Mother of all Priests" and the "Model of all Consecrated Life."

Yearly reassess your personal witness and apostolic activities to discern how you may be a more fruitful instrument for the Lord of the Harvest.

Zero in on other creative ways to getother involved in promoting and supporting priestly and religious
vocations.
