Bishop's column

My Dear Friends, I am writing to update you on some activities that the Diocese of Grand Rapids is working on in downtown Grand Rapids, specifi cally in the Heartside area, just east of Highway U.S.131.

In the past several months, we have created
opportunities that brought more than 10,000 people
to the Cathedral of Saint Andrew for the first time.

Celebrating confirmations at the cathedral introduced many to our Mother Church. Recently, over 700 people attended the ordinations of our three new priests and deacon. Such participation is not only gratifying but refl ects positively the life of our diocesan church and the people's desire to be a part of it. This brings me to the news I wish to share with you.

In recent years the diocese has acquired properties in downtown Grand Rapids. These acquisitions have presented the opportunity for us to bring together our various institutions into a cohesive, focused ministerial setting that will enhance our effectiveness, increase visibility of the church and signifi cantly reduce our administrative costs. At the center of these properties, is the Cathedral of Saint Andrew.

The area will be known as "Cathedral Square." It will encompass 11.5 acres of downtown property which is bordered by Division Avenue on the west, Cherry Street on the north, LaGrave Avenue on the east and Wealthy Street on the south. The Cathedral Square neighborhood area and adjoining properties will include:

  • Cathedral of Saint Andrew
  • Cathedral Parish Office
  • Cathedral Residence
  • Catholic Central High School
  • Catholic Central High School/Saint Andrew Gymnasium
  • Saint Andrew School
  • Catholic Charities West Michigan/Catholic Social Services
  • God's Kitchen o 215 Sheldon SE (occupied by Saint Mary Health Care)
  • 359 S. Division (Now occupied by Heartside Clinic/ Saint Mary Health Care)
  • 350 S. Division (Former Uptown Cleaners Building)
  • 355 Sheldon SE (Former Jobbers Warehouse (aka C. Bell Chevrolet)

Immediate work includes environmental clean up and site clearing. At the same time we will begin to develop the area which, as it is completed over the next few years, will include the diocesan offi ces/operations center, conference facilities and evangelization center. We are pleased that Saint Mary's Health Care services will share some of this new building with us.

As you know, we are also selling the property on Burton Street to partially offset the costs of renovating the new area and will look to bonds and donations to complete it. Cathedral Square enables us to join more closely with neighboring institutions such as Saint Mary's Health Care Campus which includes The Lacks Cancer Center, The Wege Institute, and the new Hauenstein Center currently under construction.

As we better understand the needs of this neighborhood, the broader community and Catholic partners, we will begin looking seriously at refurbishing Saint Andrew School as well as complementing our neighborhood growth in the best way possible. We will learn a lot from Saint Mary's master planning as well as the Grand Rapids' Inner City Christian Federation's plans to redevelop the area south of Wealthy and from Division eastward beginning this summer.

These are some of the renewal efforts taking place in this downtown area. I am proud that, as church, we will have a strong presence there. I ask for your prayers and support in this effort. As we put more specifi c plans together, I will continue to keep you informed. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I am grateful for all you do for Our Lord's Church. With good wishes to you and your family, Sincerely yours in the Lord.

- Bishop Walter A. Hurley is the 11th bishop of the Diocese of Grand Rapids.
