"He became poor so that by his poverty you might become rich!"
(Theme of Pope Francis' Lenten Message for 2014)
Observing the season of Lent: resources, enrichment, reflections
The Catholic observance of Lent began on Ash Wednesday (March 5), a day of fasting and abstinence. At Mass on Ash Wednesday, the imposition of ashes replicates an ancient penitential practice and symbolizes our dependence upon God's mercy and forgiveness. The season of Lent lasts approximately 40 days and leads us into the celebration of Holy Week and Easter.
