Pope Francis names 12th bishop of Grand Rapids

Bishop-elect Walkowiak meets staff, parishioners -  April 18, 2013On Tuesday, June 18, the same day he turns 60 years old,
Bishop David J. Walkowiak (wall-COE-vee-ack) will be ordained to the episcopacy and installed as the 12th bishop of Grand Rapids during a Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew.

The announcement by the Vatican that Pope Francis had appointed Bishop Walkowiak, a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland, Ohio, to succeed Bishop Walter Hurley came during a press conference on April 18 at Cathedral Square Center in Grand Rapids. Following his meeting with the media, Bishop Walkowiak celebrated a noon Mass in the chapel of the cathedral and then toured Cathedral Square Center during which he met members of the staff as well as parishioners and visitors attending events in the building.
