Thank you for your support of 2018 disaster relief efforts

CNS photo - Hurricane Florence recoverySecond collection in parishes Sept. 29/30 has raised, to date, $46,712 in disaster relief assistance. Thank you for your generosity and prayers.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Michael which devastated the Florida Panhandle, search and rescue crews continue to look through wreckage in the hope of finding survivors. The death toll has reached 18 and is expected to climb, and people in the hardest hit areas are in need of essential supplies.

On Sept. 15, Hurricane Florence devastated parts of the Carolinas. The full extent of the damage from these hurricanes and their aftermath is still being assessed.

And, in late September a 7.5 magnitude earthquake triggered an unexpected tsunami, which hit the city of Palu, Indonesia. Buildings and homes were destroyed, and thousands remain missing. The death toll has reached 2,000 and is expected to rise.

It is anticipated that these tragic events are only the first in a series of natural disasters which may occur this year and that funding for both immediate and future relief efforts will be needed.

While we continue to offer prayers for those affected, our financial support is needed as well.

On Sept. 29/30 a special second collection was taken up in our parishes to assist with 2018 disaster relief efforts. Funds received through that collection will support the humanitarian and relief efforts of Catholic Charities USA and/or Catholic Relief Services and will provide funding for immediate emergency needs like water, food, and shelter, as well as pastoral and rebuilding support to Catholic dioceses impacted by Hurricane Florence, the tsunami in Indonesia, or other disasters that may strike in the coming months, domestically or internationally.
