Members of the St. Mary Magdalen Parish community gathered Wednesday, May 29 for a groundbreaking ceremony for their new church at 1213 52nd St. SE in Kentwood. Their church was destroyed by a fire on July 1, 2012. Parish leaders have worked with architects and the diocese on a new design and are now in the midst of raising funds for the rebuilding effort.
At the ceremony, Bishop Walter Hurley blessed the site; parishioners, staff and others prayed, read scripture and sang hymns to formally mark the start of construction. Parish leaders hope to have the church open by Easter 2014.
