Pope encourages care of the poor with new World Day

Image: Pope Francis embracing a poor person pictured on the World Day of the Poor posterWith the introduction of World Day of the Poor Nov. 19, Pope Francis invites Christians around the world to embrace those suffering from poverty, not in word, but through concrete actions. (1 John)

Instituted by the pope following the
2015-16 Year of Mercy, the World Day of the Poor is a new celebration on the Catholic calendar. The pope has asked Catholics to recognize this special day every year on the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, which typically falls in November.

The pope's message for the first World Day of the Poor is entitled "Let us love, not with words but with deeds” and was released by the Vatican in June. The title of the message is taken from John’s first letter, in which the apostle tells the Christian community of his time: “Let us not love in word or speech, but in deed and in truth.”
