Pope encourages care of the poor with second annual World Day

Image: World Day of the Poor poster image 2018With the observance of World Day of the Poor Nov. 18, Pope Francis invites Christians around the world to embrace those suffering from poverty, not in word, but through concrete actions.

Instituted by the pope following the
2015-16 Year of Mercy, the World Day of the Poor is a relatively new celebration on the Catholic calendar. The pope has asked Catholics to recognize this special day every year on the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, which typically falls in November.

The pope's message for the second World Day of the Poor is entitled "This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him.” (Psalm 34:7) In his message, Pope Francis challenges us to use the World Day of the Poor as an opportunity to hear the cry of the poor and to recognize their needs, keeping in mind there are many different forms of poverty.
