May 18, 1675 Pere Jacques (Father James) Marquette S.J., age 37, dies in the area of Ludington. He passes away in the present day location of Ludington on the west side of Marquette Lake, on South Lakeshore Drive. There is a marker memorializing the event. In 1677, a group of Odawa return his remains, using a 30 canoe flotilla, to the Jesuit mission in St. Ignace.
September 3, 1793 The Treaty of Paris brought the Territory of Michigan under American rule bringing Michigan under the jurisdiction of the first American Bishop, John Carroll of Baltimore.
