April 18, 2013 Rev. David John Walkowiak, priest of the Diocese of Cleveland, Ohio, is appointed Bishop of Grand Rapids.
April 27, 2014 Pope John Paul II is canonized.
August 20, 2014 Edmund Casimir Cardinal Szoka, President Emeritus of the Governatorate of Vatican City State passes away. Cardinal Szoka was born in Grand Rapids, raised in Muskegon, and attended St. Joseph Seminary, Grand Rapids. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Marquette. He was appointed the first Bishop of the Diocese of Gaylord, Michigan, in 1970. In 1981, he was appointed Archbishop of Detroit. In 1990, he was appointed Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See later President of the Governatorate of Vatican City State.
