Bishop Baraga

A bronze sculpture honoring the memory, mission and legacy of Venerable Bishop Frederic Baraga was unveiled, dedicated and blessed Tuesday, July 24 at Cathedral Square outside the Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Grand Rapids. The 7.5-foot tall sculpture, commissioned and funded by the Peter Secchia family, is the fourth in a series of 25 planned by the Grand Rapids Community Legends Project which was created to recognize historical figures who have contributed to the city of Grand Rapids. The project was designed to encourage education and celebrate the history of the area. Bishop Walter Hurley, Peter F. Secchia, Joseph Becherer, Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell and sculptor Jay Hall Carpenter spoke during the event.
