Statement regarding death of two sisters in Mississippi

The Diocese of Grand Rapids’ office of communications relays the following statement from Bishop David J. Walkowiak in response to the death of two sisters in Mississippi:
The people of the Diocese of Grand Rapids and I offer our deepest sympathy to the two religious communities affected by this brutal crime in Mississippi. We ask the Lord to welcome Sister Paula Merrill, SCN, and Sister Margaret Held, SSSF, into his eternal embrace.
The sisters spent their life dedicated to the call of the Lord and while we mourn their death, we remember the good they brought to the towns in which they worked and the people they served.
I ask all people in West Michigan to pray for Sister Paula and Sister Margaret, their families, the communities of the Sisters of Charity, the School Sisters of St. Francis, and the towns where they lived and worked. May they rest in God’s peace this day!
